FAQ Regarding the Las Vegas First Responder Mental Health Fund

1. How does the fund work?

Donations via the Facebook and GoFundMe fundraisers are considered “restricted donations”. This means they can only be used according to the conditions of the donation. In this case donations are restricted to being used for mental health care of affected first responders, their family members, and first responder agencies for a period of 5 years. Donations received via Paypal or check that have “Las Vegas First Responder Mental Health Fund” or similar in their memo line will also be earmarked for the fund.

Funds will be paid out upon receiving a request for assistance. At the end of 5 years (10/2/2022) any money remaining in the fund will be moved to our general treatment scholarship fund. If any first responders affected by the Las Vegas incident reach out for financial assistance for treatment after the 5 year mark they will receive funds from our general scholarship fund.

3. Who is eligible to receive money from the fund?

First responder agencies, first responders, and appropriate family members of first responder who were involved in the response to the mass shooting on 10/1/2017 in Las Vegas Nevada. “First responder” includes dispatchers, EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and staff of air ambulance agencies. “Appropriate family member” means a significant other, spouse, child/step-child, or other family who resides with the first responder, and has experienced secondary trauma or who needs to participate in the first responder’s treatment (eg couple’s therapy, family therapy, etc).

4. First responders were at work when this happened, why isn’t it considered a work related injury?

Nevada’s Worker’s Comp laws do allow people to file a claim if they sustain a psychological injury at work. However, the law as a narrow definition of what kind of event caused the injury. They require that someone either sustained a physical injury or was in grave danger. Unfortunately they do not go off of perceived danger, but actual danger. This means that anyone who arrived on scene after the gunfire stopped will likely have their Worker’s Comp claim denied, and dispatchers have effectively zero chance of getting coverage under Worker’s Comp.

5. What are some examples of how the fund will be used?

Money from the fund will be allowed to be used for multiple costs related to mental health care. Including paying for co-pays for therapy/counseling sessions, cost of sessions not covered by insurance, inpatient treatment programs, intensive outpatient treatment programs, travel to inpatient or residential treatment programs specialized for first responders. Funds can also be used for costs incurred directly from the need for mental health care, such as increased childcare or long distance travel. First responder agencies who request money from the fund will be able to use it to pay for having specially trained counselors/therapists/psychologists come in to speak with their staff, costs of having out-side peer support personnel on site, and costs related to education for staff or management. Individual requesting funds will take precedence over first responder agencies

6. How can I request help for myself or my agency?

Please contact us here with your request. Please be sure to include “Las Vegas Help” or similar in your subject line. In the coming weeks we will have a more formal application process in place.

7. Will people know if I get help from the fund?

No! While we will periodically publish information about the fund it will not include any information about the specific people or organizations the money went to, unless we have written permission to make it public. The information we publish will include the total amount left in the fund and how much was spent since the last report was published.

8. How will funds be paid out?

This depends on exactly what the funds are paying for. In general, the preference will be to pay the funds directly to the biller, eg. the counselor, therapist, etc who is providing services. This can be done several ways depending on the situation. We will work with anyone who is approved in order to make sure they receive the care they need.

9. What about first responders who were attending the concert, had family at the concert, or were bystanders that went to help?

These requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Responders who were not on duty but were present at the concert should qualify for monetary support from funds set up for victims of the event.

10. Why does the fundraiser bar on this page have a different number than I’ve seen elsewhere?

The amount on this page is the true total of all donations, including donations from checks and cash. There is no way to add these amounts to the Facebook  and GoFundMe fundraisers, which is why the totals are different.
